Volcano Princess is a project by 养蛋人工作室 Egg Hatcher and published by Gamera Games. Dive into a parenting simulator with a twist: you’re raising a daughter of legend. This delightful adventure boasts a parenting and RPG combination. A key for this game was kindly granted to me through Terminals IO. So, just a quick thank you to them for that. Furthermore, let’s get down to raising a kid with VIBE and a scoring review at the end.
A Tale Begins
IC: Lilacmage
The game begins with a very indepth customization on the ruler to be. This addition of blood type was quite clever. Although, if any of you readers are like myself, you probably don’t know your own blood type. It gives that personal touch right at the beginning of the game which is helpful to maintain that connection with the child you’re going to be raising throughout the game. The daughter ages throughout the game and starts with the child as a toddler and then progresses. It’s entirely up to the player what activities and experiences their daughter has overall shaping what kind of monarch they will be when they have reached adulthood and ready to take the throne.
How Do You Raise A Kid?
IC: Lilacmage
As with real life there is no simple one size fits all formula for raising a kid. However, in volcano princess you can choose which type of father you would like to be. This includes proud, safe, and doting. The player must take their daughter through their early years by teaching them lessons that boost attributes such as emotions, imagination, intelligence, and strength. Each activity will lead to a skill increase. For example, listening to stories in the town inn will raise the imagination attribute. During the early years it’s imperative that the player works on each skill as this will be dependent in the adolescent years on what type of teenager your child will grow into.
Teenage Years
IC: Lilacmage
The teenage years introduces a lot of the more complicated aspects of the game. The player now controls the teenager and does a host of activities such as part time jobs, school, adventuring, romancing, and spending time with their father. The teenage years are enjoyable as you begin to get a sense of what type of character you want them to be. For example, I could pick a creative route for my teen and have them star in plays, paint, and play music. Each character becomes a knight at this stage but it depends on which house they choose for what the rest of the game will be like.
Choosing A House
IC: Lilacmage
The player has three choices on selecting a house. Each house has different strengths. Handel has more focus on adventuring and the strengths of the player would be strength itself. The royal family has a focus on the arts and more of a focus on imagination and the Brian family are focused on intelligence. This adds a layer of personality to the game and allows for replayability.
Romancing
IC: Lilacmage
At the teenage years the romance option is unlocked. At present it follows a gifting system where players must find suitable gifts and gift them to suitors. In return the suitors will then lavish the players with gifts and promises of betrothal. Personally, having a romance system in any game like this is always interesting. It adds to that replayability again as, if you don’t romance someone one play through, you can come back for the next.
Combat
IC: Lilacmage
The combat for volcano princess follows a turn based system. Players when reaching adolescent age must venture into certain locations and face monsters. The player initially is not strong enough but finds pairing up with other adventurers will help them in their quests. Defeat fairly interesting designed monsters and build your strength to become the knight you aspire to be. Additionally, there is a range of weapons such as sword, bow, etc that can be purchased by doing hunts to gain money. This is a layer I definitely didn’t expect in a parenting sim. However, it’s definitely an enjoyable one.
