This Past Sunday, June 12th, 2022 Microsoft showcased Redfall; it was created by Arkane Austin who was behind Prey and Dishonored. Appearing as a horror where Vampires have taken over, blocking out the sun and pushing back the water, Redfall, Massachusettes was cut off from the rest of the world. Four heroes are stepping up, to find the secret of the vampires and to take their town back. Unravel the mystery of the Vampires appearing and ally with a handful survivors. With help, fight against the cultists who want to be vampires and the creatures sucking the town dry. It’s set to release some time in 2023.
Gameplay
One of the selling points of this game is that you can solo the game or squad up. With different loadouts to choose from, combine strengths to find a solution to the vampire apocalypse. Each Character has abilities that can suit your playstyle be it guns blazing, stealthy, or just supporting from the back.
Another selling point is that Redfall is completely open world. This allows to find all the pieces of the puzzle in any order from Downtown to the seaside boardwalk. If you decide a second play, maybe head to the lighthouse first, which was visited last the first play.
Each of the Heroes have their own abilities as well. While details in the showcase were not given to these abilities, the game’s site listed some.
Heroes
The First Hero is Devinder Crousley. Devinder is a the verified Cryptid Hunter, or as he prefers, Cryptozoologist. Armed with weapons of his own creation, he is trying to prove himself. Some of the gameplay footage suggests that he may be the support of the group and he is the one who carries everything and assists the others.
Next up is Layla Ellison, Biomedical Engineering student and she interned at a research facility, where an accident occurred leaving Layla with Telekinetic abilities. She is also in a lot of student debt and appears to be the tank of the group. First one in, blocks damage and pushes enemies back and she may end up as everyone’s favorite.
Remi De La Rosa is a brilliant combat engineer who spent her life on the frontlines. She is determined to rescue Redfall’s survivors, with her robot friend. The Robot, Bribon, acts and is treated like a pet dog. She appears tp be DPS, or an off tank. With little knowledge on her skill set, there is no way to know at this point in time.
Lastly, Jacob Boyer, an ex military sharpshooter, but he is now a private contractor. The Strange happenings of Redfall left Jacob with a Vampiric eye and a spectral raven. This raven is never far from his side. As the sniper, he is definitely DPS.
Author’s Thoughts
Is this another take at a Left 4 Dead game? It certainly appears to be, but this has a more in depth story. The showcase didn’t give a lot of information regarding actual gameplay or mechanics. It did give off a good vibe for the game and I am looking forward to its release in 2023. The horror dark, fighting vampires definitely got my attention from the first gameplay footage. As a Result, Redfall has set a bar that I hope it achieves once it releases.
