Speed Dating For Ghosts brought to us by Copy chaser games is an intriguing and interesting take on games where your choices influence your playthrough. The game has been out for a while now, but is currently 85% off on Steam. Therefore, feeling like the perfect time to try. Plus, anything with ghosts count me in. The game is a very short but charming experience which takes the player through a variety of speed dating interactions. Meet several different ghost types as you choose who you would like to go on a date with. Humorous dialogue and quirky characters await you.

Setting The Scene

The game starts with a selection of rooms to choose from. The rooms that the player chooses from in Speed Dating For Ghosts depends on what ghosts you will encounter for the speed dating. Each Room has the game describing it differently and in such an illustrating way. For example, the room of Palms:

“It looks like the basement of an old church. Faded linoleum floors. Spare walls with odd religious print, framed in peach-colored wood.”

As a result of this, the game helps players start expanding their imagination and begin arriving at their own conclusions to what the setting should be looking like. Personally, I felt this was great. Despite, this descriptive style the characters were very different and were designed in a fantastic and vibrant way that made them unique.

Colorful Characters

Above, features just some of the characters in the game. Each ghost is designed to reflect their personality. For example, Leon is pictured above as a shark shaped ghost. In the game Leon tries to entice the character into robbing a bank for money. Therefore, indicating this ghost had a shark like nature when he was alive. On the other hand, Kyo appears as a withdrawn owl like figure. Kyo reports that he is anxious and suffers from depression. Thus, highlighting the reason he was depicted this way in game. With each new room brings a variety of interesting ghosts. The player experiences several conversations that are interesting. As a result of this, the player often has emotional conversations revolving around how the ghost they are talking to has died.

Emotional Encounters

Speaking with the ghosts whether it was at the table or on the date, led to some interesting conversations. The ghosts often offered their cause of death and how they had came to be at a speed dating event. Each ghost had a unique story. The game very much takes the style of a visual novel with some dialogue and action choices which allow the player to shape their playthrough. However, the real choice leads to choosing which ghost you will be heading on a date with. Some encounters will leave the player going home lonely as they may say the wrong thing. Despite, this it’s clear that the player is very much in charge of how the dates will go and if they want a date at all. Each ghost has different ideas for dates based on their personality and this is where the fun begins!

Fun Filled Dates

The actual dates that the player goes on can be incredibly fun. For example, going on a date with Riley a jock. Riley died from head injuries sustained from football. It becomes very clear to the player that Riley is very sports focused. Therefore, the date involving Riley and the player is to attend an american football match. The game, allows the player to choose choices in this segment that are reminisce of an actual football match. The player must choose plays such as going for a touchdown or going short to play it safe. Despite, there being an element of competitiveness between the player and the date it leads to a very wholesome date. The thrill is definitely in not knowing how the date will shape up.

Random Moments of Horror

Playing the game, I was unsure there would be any horror moments. The reason I believed there would be horror was just due to the fact it was a game about ghosts. However, on one of the dates a ghost named “Gary” appears and has the most horrific appearance. Pictured above Gary startled me as previously it had been solely wholesome ghosts with quirky appearances. The blood, eyes, and gaping mouth really do set the scene for a very horrific ghost to be doing a speed dating event. Despite, this it helped infuse some horror into this wholesome little game. Something it didn’t necessarily need but was good for some variety.

Replayability

The game is very short. However, quality is better than quantity and Speed Dating For Ghosts delivers this. The player can only pick one date from each room but can go back and replay the rooms and choose different characters. The graveyard feature in the main menu shows the ghosts the player has encountered. The goal of the game is to have had dates with all the ghosts and unlocked their secrets. Finding out how each ghost died is extremely interesting and enticing. Additionally, each new ghost will have a new ghost date idea to try! Therefore, making the game replayable until all the ghosts have been dated. Despite, this it would be ideal if the game was slightly longer with more influential choices that impact the shape of the story.
