Starting The Tale

The story at times is limiting and there is not much direct focus on it. However, there is ample opportunities to explore the story through the visitors to your shop. Each customer or merchant arriving at the shop tells tales of the world where Potion Craft is set in. For example, a wandering dwarf whom sells the player minerals tells of epic tales of fighting monsters in underground caverns whilst mining. As a result of this, the alchemist can live vicariously through the stories that his customers and merchants inform him of.

Potion Brewing

Potion brewing gameplay is increasingly fun. The player finds themselves interacting with the cauldron by adding ingredients, stirring the ingredients and utilising a mortar and pestle to ground ingredients before adding them. As a result of this, the game presents a more hands on approach to potion brewing than just clicking to add ingredients.

Furthermore, the variety of potions is exciting. The player must navigate the map shown above to discover new potions. The skulls depicted above are obstacles and if navigated into can result in the potion failing. The book symbols are research points. The more research points the more skills can be purchased from the skill trees. The skills improve things such as trading, haggling and potion quality.

Trading

Trading is the main goal of the game aside from brewing potions. Players must sell the potions brewed to the customers. However, each customer will request a specific potion. There is a wide range of variety of potions in the game as aforementioned. They range from sinister ones such as poison to useful ones such as healing. Each customer will tell a tale of why they want the potion. An interesting aspect to trading was customers who didn’t tell you outright what the potion was called so you had to do some detective work to put it together.

Haggle Like Your Life Depended On It

Haggling is extremely useful as it will allow you to charge more for the potions you brew. Some customers will suggest ridiculously low prices for the potions they are requesting. The player enters a minigame that presents as a slider that must be clicked at the appropriate time. Therefore, resulting in the price of the potion increasing so that the player can maximise profits. However, if the player fails the minigame the potion may be even less than what the person asked resulting in a loss of profits. This emphasises that the game has a business focus and the better sales of the potion results in being able to buy additional items such as ingredients for potions or equipment to aid potion brewing.

Accessing Ingredients

Managing ingredients is essential. The garden outside the alchemy shop yields several ingredients. Furthermore, merchants come to the store selling ingredients and can be haggled with for better prices. The ingredients vary from herbs to mushrooms. The design for the ingredients is fantastic with the colour palette of them fitting in with the art style of the game. It takes a while for the player to learn them all but soon the player is a well versed alchemist and knows exactly what ingredient looks like.

Recipes

Recipes can be difficult to memorise. However, there is a recipe book for those more difficult potions. Players can save their recipes. As a result of this, they can be quick brewed without going through the exploratory stage. Therefore, allowing for a quicker way to serve customers. There is no time limit but its to allow the player to progress. Furthermore, the cost to buy new pages for the recipe book is expensive. Additional pages need to be purchased from the merchants and recipes are stored this way. Therefore, sometimes it’s better for the player to memorise recipes and only use the book for ones that have loads of ingredients and are better for quick brewing.
