This year is a pretty fundamental one for the James Bond franchise. It marks the 60th anniversary of the series overall. But also, there’s a special anniversary for the Nintendo 64 classic Goldeneye 007. It came out in 1997, which means the game is celebrating its 25th (gasp) anniversary in its own right.
Of course, you have people asking, “Well, if only there was a way to enjoy it on modern consoles!” But hang tight, you just might get your wish.
A few online achievements have appeared for the Xbox remaster of Goldeneye, suggesting that the game is active again and might just get a release on Xbox One/Xbox Series S/X sooner than you think.
Wario64 shared an achievement list a few days back, as you can see below.
But there are also screens of said achievements, indicating that things are about to get serious. Maybe.
And then there’s a game thumbnail for how Goldeneye would appear in the Xbox menu. Hmmm.
You may recall that, a while ago, Microsoft was actually working alongside Rare on a Goldeneye 007 remaster for Xbox 360. However, despite the company clearing the rights with MGM (at the time), Nintendo balked at the release, since they still held the rights to the franchise to a certain extent.
But now that Nintendo and Microsoft are chummy – and Nintendo is looking for a game to boost its Nintendo Switch Online service – there could be something showing that the Goldeneye re-release could finally happen. And MGM/Amazon Studios could make the announcement literally at any time.
What’s more, Microsoft could announce something where the game is on Xbox Game Pass, and Nintendo, in some form of partnership, could bring it to Nintendo Switch Online’s Expansion Pack as well. That’s a longshot, but definitely, a possibility that would benefit both companies. Especially if there’s online crossplay, which would be a dream feature (save for those chumps that keep picking Oddjob on Slappers Only).
Microsoft hasn’t said a word just yet, but fingers crossed that the mightiness of Goldeneye makes a return. We definitely need our multiplayer again. (Not to mention it’s been forever since we threw proximity mines around…)
