Cult Of The Lamb: Cutesy Colorful Cult Builder

Cult of the Lamb brought to us by DevolverDigital is an enticing rogue-like game where you control a cult of animal followers. Yes, you heard right. Playing as a lamb who was initially sent to the slaughter, you are beheaded and then are reborn as a god. Players will spend hours making sure that their cult is in peak shape and that faith is at an all time high. If you ever wanted to run a cult then this is the right game for you. It has all the features you’d expect from a cult: sacrifices, imprisonment of dissenters, and communal living!

Game play

At the moment, Cult Of the Lamb has several aspects of fun and interesting game play. The players main aim is to run a successful cult whilst trying to kill four other cult leaders. The game features rogue-like game play where if you die you go right back to your cult. However, you must also make sure your cult is generating devotion to you, that they are not dissenting, and that they are fed and working.

The combat in the rogue-like elements of the game is fast paced. Players must defeat several ‘heretics’ before they can progress to the boss of the area. The levels are split into four different areas Darkwood, Anura, Anchordeep, and Silk Cradle. Each level has a specific boss and they are usually themed after the type of area it is. For example, Anchordeep being nautical themed featured a boss named Kallamar. Kallamar was essentially a giant squid looking creature. However, players will have to combine their cult building and their rogue-like skills in order to progress and grow the cult. To unlock each door to the boss’ location m, a certain amount of cult followers are required with 12 being the highest.

Cult building is incredibly fun. Players must ensure that they are recruiting followers who take the form of cutesy animals such as hedgehogs and unicorns. Additionally, players can customize the colors of the animals, the form of the animals, and even if they want them to have any sort of markings like an upside down cross. Followers also must be kept happy once they are recruited. This can be done through a variety of ways such as gifting them objects, cooking them meals, delivering sermons, and just making sure that the faith meter is at capacity.

Rituals

Rituals are an enticing part of game play which involves either descending follower loyalty or gaining it. There is a wide variety of rituals in the game such as banquets, public holidays, and the one you expect from stereotypical cults SACRIFICE! Personally, sacrifice is my favorite. However, this can often lose faith in your followers as they fear they will be next. Additionally, there is also a marriage ceremony where cult leaders can marry their followers and gain perks such as increased loyalty.

Happy Followers Happy Life

Dissenting followers can make or break your cult. However, there are easy ways to stop them from spreading poison about the cult. Pictured above is a dissenting follower shouting about the cult leader and the practices the cult employs. As a result of this, the other followers begin to question and become unhappy with the cult and the leader. However, players can imprison their dissenting followers and restore peace and balance to the unruly cult. Additionally, by raising the loyalty it allows for followers to manically laugh at dissenters.

Fun Side Quests

The game features a lot of quirky side quests. One of the ones that stood out was knuckle bones. Knuckle bones is a dice game that involves lining up the dice to create the highest amount and matching similar dice to destroy your opponents dice. Players will get the chance to face off against a variety of characters. Each new character brings a new difficulty element to the dice game and leaves a satisfying level of competition.

Combat

Combat is reminiscence of popular rouge like Hades. Each trip into the four different locations of Cult Of the Lamb sees players defeat hordes of enemies and gather resources. The enemies are named heretics fitting with the religious overtones of the game. Resources collected help go towards cooking for followers and building improved buildings such as shelters or work places.The combat is fast paced and a variety of weapons and casting spells are available. Additionally, the player has access to tarot cards which gave the player boost such as an additional heart, maximized damage or faster movement speed.

Graphical Bugs

Unfortunately, at the moment players are reporting a mass of graphical glitches and bugs that stunt progression. One common graphical bug I kept encountering was the game not transitioning between loading screens and the only fix being reloading the game. As a result of this, it caused several moments of frustration due to loss progress and swearing I was going to uninstall the game. PC players are reporting less bugs than consoles so I may have to switch to my PC.
