The Serpent Rogue is a game about collecting resources, crafting, and surviving. Play as an aesthetically pleasing plague doctor as you traverse the lands.
Earlier this year, I had a look at the demo for The Serpent Rogue. I am beyond hyped to be here and reviewing it currently! If you want to check out my previous article on The Serpent Rogue it can be found here: :https://vibethenook.com/an-initial-look-at-the-serpent-rogue/ The Serpent Rogue was developed by Sengi Games, published by Team 17, and presents as a botanical RPG. Sengi Games is an indie studio hailing from Ukraine and was formed in 2018. So far, the serpent rogue is their main project. Although, it looks like it will shape up to be not everyone’s cup of tea, it certainly boasts a unique world and interesting gameplay. Join us as we recall our exciting tale as the plague doctor character the Warden.
Traversing The Terrain
The world is an unforgiving, yet darkly beautiful place. In a land wreaked by corruption, there’s a corruption that turns animals and humans alike into decaying dark entities that attack the player at every opportunity. The player takes the helm as a warden, an intriguing plague doctor character who has an avid interest and speciality in potion making. The player must traverse the land and collect ingredients and resources to help make potions with an array of deadly or beneficial properties. Potions are the main way a warden will protect themselves against the threats of the land. Resources are abundant in the world, it’s just a case of sourcing them.
A Story That Falls Short
The story is set in a medieval-like world. As mentioned previously, the world is deteriorating by a deadly and sickening corruption plague. The game is not a narrative based game and instead tells the story through lore that the player finds on their travels. The player picks up several items that will tell the tale of the locations and NPCs that you encounter. This poses a problem as the player may not find the items and then is missing out chunks of the story. Furthermore, one disappointing aspect was how little interaction happened with NPCs. NPCs often repeat the same lines to the character. During the course of the game you work with the villagers to help them. Even after helping them there isn’t much change to their interactions with the character. As a result of this, traversing the world and exploring the realm could be quite a solitude and lonely experience.
The potion crafting is not as complex as players first perceive it to be. It involves a lot of field work and trying to think about where somethings likely to be found. In terms of equations, each ingredient will say what the property of it is. For example, in the picture above it states Add, 20 Damage and Vitality. This is the components that mix together to perform a potion that allows for healing. As a result of this, the player must remember the combinations to achieve the potion they require. However, the game does provide a helping hand by displaying the recipes for the player to have a look at. If you fancy yourself a potion maker, this game is definitely for you.
On the other hand, the crafting can feel at times tedious. Players must continuously craft to make any progress in the game. Emphasis is placed on the fact that if you don’t want a game with in-depth and heavy crafting focus, this is not the rpg for you. Damage potions can be extremely handy for the player, especially during boss fights. This is the wardens main combat approach and, once players master it, combat becomes less difficult.
Recruiting a Merry Band
The game encourages the player to seek out followers. The aim of the followers is to help assist with elements of gameplay such as combat. The warden struggles with combat and is relatively quite squishy. (Yes, squishy. That is the technical term) However, having the followers allows them to assist and take most of the brunt of the damage. Followers can be bought at a port area in the game and range from cheap to expensive. The price depends on how skilled the followers are. If a follower has a vicious or unique weapon, they may cost the warden more to purchase to recruit them to their band of merry followers.
Additionally, one enticing aspect of gameplay, for myself personally, was the pet taming. Pets can also be added to the roster. Creatures such as wolves can be tamed to allow for a great hunting buddy and protector. Its done very easily by feeding the creature its preferred meal of choice. The starting tutorial allows you to source raw meat and tame a wolf creature. Previously, the wolf had been starving and having the player redeem and build up the wolves strength is a very nice and rewarding touch.
