Checking Out the Demo

This is a quick look at the demo for The Serpent Rogue. This will be short and brief and acts as a sneak peak for those who may want to try the demo or look forward to the game themselves.

There is currently a demo for The Serpent Rogue available on Steam, before its initial release in April 2022. The demo outlines the main aims of the game. Playing as The Warden, players can either pick a female or male plague doctor. Crafting, combat and pet taming are just some of the features that the game boasts.

The Serpent Rogue is an action adventure RPG set in a medieval setting with the threat of a blight plaguing the land. Tackle the main antagonist, Morbus, whilst mastering the worlds of alchemy, cuisine and elements.

Who is The Warden?

Not much is discussed about the character The Warden in The Serpent Rogue.  The Warden is tasked with exploring and finding a way to tackle the blight which has infected the land. Infecting people and animals, The Warden works to investigate any blighted animals in the demo and also converse with any humans they encounter on their travels.

Potion Master, Beast Master and Beast Master

The Warden is a plague doctor and can craft several potions. For example, medicinal herbs can be harvested and turned into salves or potions. The Warden must also look after hunger and thirst and has access to several stoves around the map to cook delicacies. Recipes can be found and this increases the chance of a successful meal with stat buffs.

There is skill trees pertaining to the crafting of potions and recipes. In the demo there was limited access to this but it did allow an introduction to the crafting, leaving the player with enough insight of how it will work when the full game is released.

The Warden can also tame animals to aid them in their quest if they collect the right food items to help tame the animal. In the demo you encounter a starving dog and after feeding him scraps of meat, he joins you in the quest.

The Big Bad

Combat was interesting during the demo, due to the fact that no weapons could be found to help aid combat. The player takes on a blighted creature in the wasteland with just fists and easily succumbs to injuries. Upon death, the player wakes up at a settlement in safety but has lost the majority of their items. The player must travel back to their death location and collect their items.

The enemies in the world are primarily blighted tendrils, skeletons, fierce animals or just angry townsfolk. In the demo due to not finding a weapon, it was difficult to survive most of the encounters. Excited, to try the full game and fully immerse in the combat provided as even with hand to hand combat, it felt fresh and like it was going in the right direction.

After a quick stint at the demo, it’s clear this is going to be a successful and fresh game when it releases. I have already added this to my wishlist. Right now, the game can be wishlisted on STEAM for an April 2022 release. Any gamers looking for a fresh gaming experience should download the available demo and form their own opinions.
