ALTDEUS: Beyond Chronos is a visual novel experience. While I have played a few visual novels before, I have to say that ALTDEUS is unique and incredibly well made.
A Living Anime Done Right
ALTDEUS: Beyond Chronos is a spiritual successor/ sequel to Tokyo Chronos. However, there is no need to have played it to understand the plot of ALTDEUS.
ALTDEUS takes place around 300 years after the events of Tokyo Chronos. This means that it’s not necessary to have played Tokyo Chronos to understand the plot of ALTDEUS. Adding to the improvements is a complete translation including English voice acting which was not available for the previous game. This really adds to the immersion in the story and conversations feel more real.
With impressive character designs that feel like a 3D version of anime characters, and a great soundtrack, ALTDEUS really feels like being in an anime.
Forge Your Own Path
ALTDEUS is an experience. In VR there are 2 main types of software for it: Games and experiences. Where as games are more like traditional video games in VR, experiences are way more directed and less focused on gameplay.
ALTDEUS is a true visual novel. Following the story of Chloe (the player character) who is a “designed human” created to be at the height of physical ability. Along with the organization Prometheus, they fight against alien creatures called Meteora that have ravaged the surface of the earth.
Chloe has a deep motivation for fighting back against the Meteora, since she lost her best friend to them before the start of your playthrough. As you follow the story through Chloe’s eyes, you’ll make choices through conversations. That will lead to a myriad of endings and branching pathways like a “choose your own adventure” experience.
Also, There’s Giant Mechs!
Did I mention, the main way you fight the Meteora is using a giant mech. Along with your A.I. companion, you’ll block and attack the enormous monsters. Now, this is more about following command prompts, not actions, and reactions. So, while it looks awesome and I found the experience fun, if you’re looking for action and giant mech fights, this really isn’t the experience you’d want.
Although ALTDEUS is not really a traditional game, it is an incredibly heartfelt story with many branches. The first playthrough can take about 3 hours, but more playthroughs are required for those who like a deeper story and mysteries to uncover. ALTDEUS: Beyond Chronos is a marvel for those who love a good story, and rewards trying new branches. Bringing one of the most impressive “choose your own path” experiences ever in VR.
